Upgrade Options
There are several different ways to upgrade your computer to make it faster and more reliable and to add functionality. Many of the newer components that have become available in the last number of years can be successfully added to older computers. There are three categories of upgrade:
- Component upgrade
- Software upgrade
- Peripheral upgrade
Component Upgrades
This kind of upgrade means replacing or adding new internal components to your computer. The success of these upgrades are dependent on the existing capacity and configuration of your computer.
The most common and most popular upgrade is adding more RAM memory. The simple rule of thumb RAM memory is simple: You can never have too much. The more RAM you have the better and faster your computer will run and allows you to do several tasks at the same time. Other component upgrades:
- Faster mainboard and processor
- Higher capacity hard drive
- CD Writer
- DVD Writer
- Faster graphics card
Software Upgrades
Software upgrades generally refer to the Operating System (Windows). If your computer is running Windows 98, it may be possible to upgrade it to Windows Millennium Edition or if you computer is already running Windows Millennium Edition, it may be possible to upgrade it to Windows XP.
Other software programs can also be upgraded, like Microsoft Office. Newer versions have more features and functions and generally easier to use.
Peripheral Upgrades
Peripherals are external devices which are connected to your computer. The most common ones are:
- Printer
- Scanner
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Speakers
- Digital Camera
- Monitor
Some reasons to upgrade a peripheral:
With the advent of digital cameras it is now possible to take your own high quality photographs, transfer them onto your computer and print them out yourself. However, older printers are often incapable of printing at the high quality needed to reproduce the photograph.
Newer keyboards have extra buttons and features that allow you to open documents, programmes, connect to the internet and open emails, all at the touch of a button. The mouse has also seen a lot of improvements. They now have a laser on the underside instead of a ball. This does away with the annoying task of opening the mouse to clean the rollers and also does away with the need for a mouse mat. Another great keyboard/mouse upgrade is to go wireless. These models communicate with your computer with radio signals so you have no wires trailing across your desk.
Monitors have also come a long way. You can now get rid of your big cumbersome CRT monitor and go for a new slimline LCD monitor. Along with the space saving advantage, the picture quality is way far superior to the old type CRT screens, making them easier to use for extended periods.
